226 – Graver still is when Muslims divert themselves to fighting one another, as happens among the people of whim—tribes and the like, such as Qays, Yaman, Ḥaram, Taʿlab, Laḥm, Judhām, and others—though they live right beside the frontier posts. They forsake ribāṭ and jihād, which are the joy of this world and the next—Allah Most High says, “Say, do you await for us anything except one of the two splendid outcomes?” (al-Tawbah 9:52), meaning either victory and triumph or martyrdom and Paradise—and instead occupy themselves with the wars of trial and passion, bringing ruin in both realms.
227 – In the two authentic collections¹ it is narrated from Abū Bakrah that the Prophet ﷺ said, “When two Muslims meet with their swords, both the killer and the slain are in the Fire.” He was asked, “Messenger of Allah, that is for the killer, but what of the one who was killed?” He replied, “He was intent on killing his companion.”
228 – Allah, Exalted is He, also says: “O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and do not die except as Muslims. Hold fast, all of you together, to the rope of Allah and do not be divided. Remember Allah’s blessing upon you: when you were enemies He reconciled your hearts, and by His grace you became brothers; you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, but He rescued you from it. Thus—” (Āl ʿImrān 3:102–103).
