Masʾalah fī al-Murābaṭah wa-al-MujāwarahIbn Taimiya

197 – And in the Sunan¹ it is related from the Prophet ﷺ that he said, “There is to be no vow for an act of disobedience, and its expiation is the expiation for an oath.”

Prohibition of fasting all year round

168 – It is established in the Ṣaḥīḥ² that the Prophet ﷺ said, “The best fasting is the fasting of David; he would sleep half the night, stand in prayer for one third of it, and sleep for one sixth.”

199 – It is also widely reported from him in the Ṣaḥīḥ that he forbade continual fasting, continual night prayer, and completing a full recitation of the Qur’an in less than three days³.

201 – As another hadith states, “The religion Allah loves most is the easy, upright way.”⁴

(4) Al-Bukhari quotes the report in muʿallaq (hanging) form (1/93). Ibn Hajar comments: “This hadith is muʿallaq; al-Bukhari did not cite its full chain here because it does not meet his conditions. He does, however, supply a complete isnad for it in al-Adab al-Mufrad [287].” Ahmad ibn Hanbal [5/266] and others relate it through Muhammad ibn Ishaq → Dawud ibn al-Husayn → Ikrima → Ibn Abbas, and the chain is hasan (reliable). Al-Bukhari placed it in the chapter heading although it falls short of his usual criteria, corroborating it with other evidence that supports its meaning, in keeping with his principle of ease and facilitation. The text inside the brackets is an addition by the verifier of the hadith.
