any doubt among the ḥadith scholars. Even though Ibn Mājah included in his Sunan ⦗1⦘ the report that speaks of Qazwīn’s virtue, the scholars rejected it, just as they rejected a dozen-plus other fabricated reports of his. For that reason, they rank his compilation beneath those of Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasāʾī.
144 – As we have already noted ⦗2⦘, a town’s being a thaghr (frontier post) may be an accidental attribute or a lasting one; hence it cannot be granted perpetual praise—or subjected to perpetual blame—unless it is known that the town will forever remain in that state.
(1) Ibn Majah cites—on the authority of Anas ibn Malik—that the Messenger of Allah said: “The horizons will be opened for you and a city called Qazwin will be conquered. Whoever stands guard there for forty nights shall have in Paradise a pillar of gold bearing a green chrysolite, topped by a red-ruby dome with seventy thousand golden gates, and at each gate a wife from among the hur al-ayn.” This hadith is fabricated (mawdu).
Al-Sindi comments in his Zawaid: “Its chain is weak: it contains Yazid ibn Aban al-Ruqashi, al-Rabi ibn Sabih, and Dawud ibn al-Muhabbar—each a weak transmitter. Ibn al-Jawzi listed it in Al-Mawduat, declaring, ‘This hadith is undoubtedly fabricated; I suspect none of its fabrication but Yazid ibn Aban. What is astonishing is that Ibn Majah, despite his knowledge, included it in his Sunan without any critical remark.’”
Al-Suyuti relays from Ibn al-Jawzi: “This hadith is fabricated, for Dawud was a forger and the principal suspect; al-Rabi is weak and Yazid is discarded.” I add: this concurs with al-Dhahabi’s verdict in Al-Mizan on Dawud—“Ibn Majah did ill by introducing this fabricated report into his Sunan.” Al-Tirmidhi also noted it. Al-Suyuti further records that al-Rafi‘i, in his Tarikh, wrote: “It is a well-known narration; several people transmitted it from Dawud, and Imam Ibn Majah placed it in his Sunan. Scholars often rank his collection alongside the two Sahihs and the Sunan of Abu Dawud and al-Nasai and draw legal evidence from it, yet it is reported that Ahmad and others declared Dawud weak. Allah knows best.” See Sunan Ibn Majah with al-Sindi’s commentary, 3/350–351.
