The Merits of Ribāṭ in the Sunnah
137 – Several hadiths recorded in the canonical collections of the Ṣaḥīḥ and the Sunan detail the virtues of ribāṭ (standing guard on the frontier) that we have just described:
The hadith of Sahl ibn Saʿd.
138 – Al-Bukhārī relates in his Ṣaḥīḥ⦗2⦘—from Sahl ibn Saʿd—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Guarding the frontier for a single day in the way of Allah is better than the world and everything in it.”
(2) Al-Bukhari, no. 2892. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar notes that the wording “and whatever is upon it” is more emphatic than the variant “and whatever is in it” (Fath, 6/86). Ibn al-Mulaqqin explains: the phrase “better than the dunya and whatever is upon it” means that the reward for this deed surpasses all the pleasures of earthly life, even were someone to possess them all and delight in them, for they are transient whereas the bliss of the Hereafter is everlasting; indeed, the mere vision of His Noble Face would suffice (Ilam bi-fawaid Umdat al-ahkam, 10/286).
