Masʾalah fī al-Murābaṭah wa-al-MujāwarahIbn Taimiya

the view that postponing the prayer in a situation of fear was abrogated by this verse.1

83- They also used this to reply to those who allow both options, who cite the Prophet’s words in the rigorously authenticated ḥadīth2 reported by Ibn ʿUmar: “Let no one pray the ʿAṣr prayer except at Banū Qurayẓah.” Some of the Companions prayed on the way, saying, “He did not intend us to miss the prayer,” while others delayed it until they reached Banū Qurayẓah and the time had passed. Yet the Prophet ﷺ did not reprimand either group.

84- Thus, this ḥadīth is evidence that both courses are permissible, but those scholars maintain that it was abrogated by the verse.3

1 Ibn al-Qayyim comments: “Concerning the Prophet’s postponement of the Asr prayer on the day of al-Ahzab until sunset, scholars differ whether the ruling was later abrogated. The majority—Ahmad, al-Shafii and Malik—say it occurred before the legislation of the salat al-khawf (prayer in time of danger) and was then superseded by it; the delay was therefore like the lawful combining of two prayers and cannot be cited as proof for a forbidden omission. The case differs from the negligence of one who is awake yet remiss, and resembles instead the postponement required of a sleeper or one who forgets—indeed, it is even more justified, for at that moment the delay was commanded, just as Maghrib is lawfully deferred on the night of Jam at Muzdalifah. The second view holds that the ruling was never abrogated: a combatant may put the prayer off during actual fighting and perform it once able. This is the position of Abu Hanifah and is also reported from Ahmad. On either view, the intentional neglect of a prayer cannot be likened to this case, nor can the Companions’ postponement of Asr on the day of Banu Qurayzah, for according to a group of scholars their delay too was divinely sanctioned.” Madarij al-Salikin, 1/385. 2 Al-Bukhari, 946; Muslim, 1770 (69). 3 An additional phrase appears in the base manuscript to keep the sense coherent.
