What should be done when prayer and individually obligatory jihad come into conflict?
- As for prayer: if it conflicts with jihad that has become a personal duty, one must perform both as far as possible, just as is done in situations of minor fear and of extreme fear.
- Allah, Exalted is He, says: “Guard diligently your prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah in devout obedience. If you are in fear, then (pray) on foot or mounted.” (al-Baqarah 2:238).
- He also says: “You will not be blamed for shortening the prayer if you fear that those who disbelieve may attack you … And when you (O Prophet) are among them and lead them in prayer, let one party of them stand with you, holding their weapons. When you have finished the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, and lying on your sides. Then, when you feel secure, establish the prayer, for prayer has been prescribed for the believers at appointed times.” (al-Nisāʾ 4:101-103).
- Thus Allah commanded the observance of the two obligations—prayer and jihad—together, yet He lightened the prayer in time of fear compared with the prayer said in safety by waiving certain elements that are normally obligatory
