Masʾalah fī al-Murābaṭah wa-al-MujāwarahIbn Taimiya

On the third occasion he said: “The likeness of the one who fights in the path of Allah is that of a person who fasts, stands in prayer, and remains devoutly mindful of Allah’s revelations, never wavering in his fast or his prayer until the fighter in the path of Allah returns.” This is Muslim’s wording.

Al-Bukhārī’s wording⦗1⦘: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “Guide me to a deed that equals jihad.” He replied, “I do not find any.” The man asked, “Are you able, when the combatant goes out, to enter your mosque and remain standing without pause and fasting without breaking?” He answered, “Who could manage that?” Abū Hurayrah remarked, “Indeed, even the horse of the combatant will stir up dust while tied to its rope, and good deeds are being written for him.”

55- In the two Ṣaḥīḥs⦗2⦘ it is related from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī that a man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “Which people are the best?”

(1) Al-Bukhari, ḥadith no. 2785. "yastin" means to frolic with vigor; al-Jawhari defines it as raising the two forelegs and striking them down together, while others gloss it as charging straight at the enemy without turning back. "tawluhu"—with a kasra on the initial letter and a fatḥa on the wāw—denotes the tether-rope by which an animal is fastened; one end is held while the beast is loosed to graze. "fa-yuktabu lahu ḥasanāt": the phrase places ḥasanāt in the accusative as a second direct object, i.e., his frisking is recorded for him as good deeds. Source: Fatḥ al-Bārī, vol. 6, p. 5.
