There is no disagreement among the Muslims that travelling there for the acts of worship legislated for it is sanctioned, and that doing so is either obligatory or recommended.
-
The only discussion concerns taking up residence there, because it involves a weighing of benefit and harm, as explained earlier.1
-
Accordingly, if living there will multiply a person’s good deeds and reduce his sins, then remaining there is better for him than living in a place where his state would not be the same.
The best land for every individual
Thus the best land for any given person is wherever he is more righteous and more God-fearing, for “the noblest of you in the sight of Allah are those who are most God-fearing.”
- For this reason, when Abu al-Dardaʾ wrote to Salman al-Farisi—whom the Prophet ﷺ had joined with him in brotherhood—Abu al-Dardaʾ was in Greater Syria while Salman was in Iraq. He wrote, “Come to the Holy Land.” Salman replied, “The land itself sanctifies no one; what sanctifies a man is his righteous deed.”2
1 Reported by Malik in al-Muwattaʾ, 2/769, and by Abu Nuʿaym in Hilyat al-Awliyaʾ, 1/205. Al-Zurqani comments: “Its chain is broken; however, al-Dinawri reproduced it in al-Mujalasa through another route: from Yahya b. Saʿid, from ʿUbayd Allah b. Hubayra—Abu al-Dardaʾ wrote to Salman al-Farisi, ‘Come to the Holy Land’; al-Dinawri adds: ‘the land of jihad.’ Salman replied, ‘A land does not sanctify anyone; it neither purifies him of his sins nor elevates him to the highest ranks. What sanctifies a person is his righteous deed, wherever he may be.’ ” Al-Zurqani, Sharh, 4/93. After quoting the report, the author observes: “The Prophet had established a bond of brotherhood between Salman and Abu al-Dardaʾ, and Salman was more learned than Abu al-Dardaʾ in various matters, including this one.” Majmuʿ al-Fatawa, 18/283.
2 The base manuscript reads salihan, but the reading adopted here follows the wording found in the sources cited above.
