Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ said—in the rigorously authenticated hadith¹—when Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ returned to him after falling ill in Mecca during the Farewell Pilgrimage, “O Messenger of Allah², will I be deprived of my hijra?” He replied, “Perhaps you will remain so that some people may benefit from you while others may suffer harm. O Allah, complete my Companions’ emigration and do not turn them back upon their heels. The only unfortunate one is Saʿd ibn Khawla.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ grieved for him because he had died in Mecca.

For that very reason, when ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar died in Mecca he stipulated that he not be buried within the Sacred Precinct³ but instead taken out to the ḥill (the area outside the Sanctuary). Because the day was oppressively hot, however, they went against his bequest⁴. His death occurred the same year al-Ḥajjāj arrived, besieged Ibn al-Zubayr, and killed him during the turmoil people witnessed between him and ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān.
