Masʾalah fī al-Murābaṭah wa-al-MujāwarahIbn Taimiya

in the Ḥazwara marketplace of Mecca, proclaiming: “By Allah, you are indeed the finest of Allah’s lands and the most beloved of Allah’s lands to Allah. Had I not been driven out from you, I would never have departed.” Imam Ahmad recorded it—this is his wording—as did al-Nasaʾi, Ibn Majah, and al-Tirmidhi, who remarked, “A sound, authentic hadith.”¹

  1. Ahmad also transmitted it through a narration of Abu Hurayrah.²

Among the additional proofs for the desirability of residing there:

  1. Ibn ʿAbbas reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “How pleasant a town you are and how dear you are to me! Had my people not expelled me from you, I would have settled nowhere else.” Al-Tirmidhi related this and stated, “A sound, authentic, and singular hadith.”³

Declared authentic by al-Albani in Sahih Ibn Majah, 3108. “al-Hazurah”: written with a plain ha and a zay. Al-Tibi states: “Patterned like al-qushurah, it denotes a locality in Mecca. Some sources double the zay. Originally al-hawzura means ‘a small hill’; it received this name because there was once a little mound there. Another view says the spot was named after Waki ibn Salama ibn Zuhayr ibn Wali, guardian of the Sacred House after the Jurhum tribe, who built a structure there and stationed a female slave called Hazurah; hence the area in Mecca was called Hazurah.” See Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi, 10/426. Al-Mubarakfuri comments: “The phrase ‘I have not resided anywhere but you’ is taken by the majority as proof that Mecca is superior to Medina, contrary to the view of Imam Malik. Al-Suyuti even wrote a treatise on this question.”
