In fact, no Muslim during the Prophet’s lifetime ever performed an ʿumrah from Mecca except ʿĀʾishah alone. She had come in the state of tamattuʿ, but her menses began, preventing her from making the circumambulation before the standing at ʿArafah. She therefore asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to allow her an additional ʿumrah after the Hajj,1 and only later were the mosques at that site built, which people then started calling “ʿĀʾishah’s Mosques.”

As for the “ʿumrah of al-Hudaybiyah,” the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and his Companions assumed ihrām at Dhū al-Ḥulayfah and then halted at al-Hudaybiyah when the idolaters barred them from the House. Thus al-Hudaybiyah was merely the place where they encamped, not their site of ihrām.
This is attested by mass-transmitted reports known to scholars both general and specialist, and regarding it Allah revealed, “And complete the pilgrimage and the ʿumrah for Allah,”2 and the following verses, by the unanimous agreement of the scholars.3
(1) Al-Bukhari, no. 1561, and Muslim, nos. 1211 and 128, record the report of Aisha: “We set out with the Prophet, believing that we were performing only the hajj. When we reached Mecca we circumambulated the House, and the Prophet ordered those who had not brought a sacrificial animal (hady) to come out of ihram. Accordingly, everyone who had not brought a hady—including his wives, for they had not brought one—lifted the state of consecration. Aisha added: I began menstruating and therefore did not perform tawaf around the House. On the night of al-Hasbah I said: ‘Messenger of Allah, people will return with both an ‘umra and a hajj while I return with only a hajj.’ He asked, ‘Did you not make tawaf on the nights when we first arrived in Mecca?’ I replied, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Then go with your brother to Tan‘im, enter ihram for an ‘umra, and meet us at such-and-such a place.’ Safiyya then said, ‘It seems I am going to detain you.’ He replied, ‘Woe to you! Did you not perform tawaf on the Day of Sacrifice?’ She answered, ‘Indeed I did.’ He said, ‘There is no harm; depart.’ Aisha continues: ‘The Messenger of Allah met me while he was ascending from Mecca and I was descending toward it—or I was ascending and he was descending.’
