—something the ignorant partisans of innovation and misguidance1 imagine to be praiseworthy.
Mount Lebanon and what befell it
5- Furthermore, among these regions are some over which the enemy has gained the upper hand, or which have been inhabited by innovators and libertines; the condition of their people has consequently deteriorated, as happened in Lebanon and places of the same sort2.
(1) The author states: “Living in mountains, caves or deserts is not prescribed for Muslims except when turmoil (fitna) in the towns forces a man either to abandon the obligatory acts or to commit what is forbidden. At that point a Muslim must migrate from a land where he cannot practise his religion to one where he can, for the true emigrant is he who forsakes what God has prohibited.” Majmuʿ al-Fatawa, 27/52.
(2) Clarifying the real status of ‘Mount Lebanon’, the author writes: “There is no revealed text, from God or His Messenger, that attributes any special merit to Mount Lebanon or to any similar mountain. It is merely one of the mountains God created and set as pegs for the earth—one of His signs …
“Until the middle of the fourth Islamic century these Syrian coasts were frontiers of Islam. The Muslims had already conquered Cyprus under the caliph ʿUthman, through the campaign of Muʿawiya. But in the mid-fourth century the caliphate grew unstable and the Rafidites (Shiʿite rejecters), the munafiqun (hypocrites) and others seized power in Egypt, the Maghrib, the eastern lands and in Syria itself. They dominated parts of Syria, its coasts and its interior. They are a forsaken people, possessing neither sound reason, reliable transmission, true religion nor worldly strength. Consequently the Christians overran most of the Syrian coastline—indeed much of the country—subduing the Rafidites and munafiqun and taking from them what they pleased, until God enabled Sunni rulers such as Nur al-Din, Salah al-Din and others to reclaim most of Syria from the Christians. Remnants of the Rafidites and munafiqun, however, remained in Mount Lebanon and elsewhere, and were sometimes subdued by the Christians so that they became peasants working their lands. Thus Mount Lebanon and its likes became a territory contested between Christians and Rafidites; it possesses no virtue, and it is neither recommended—indeed it is not even permissible—for a Muslim to remain among Christians or Rafidites who prevent him from displaying his religion. Some groups, wishing to withdraw from society out of asceticism and devotion, mistakenly imagined that this mountain and the like were meritorious because of the solitude and the lawful fruits found there, and so they headed for it—an error and a misjudgement on their part.” Majmuʿ al-Fatawa, 27/50-55; see also al-Istiqaama, 2/61.}
