Question 8: What is the ruling on kissing the muṣḥaf?
Answer: In our view, this practice falls under the general purport of the prophetic sayings that include: “Beware of newly-introduced matters, for every introduced matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance,”¹ and, in another narration, “and every misguidance is in the Fire.”²

Many people take a particular stance on this detail and say, “What harm is there? It is nothing but an expression of reverence and veneration for the Qur’an.” We reply: You are correct—it is indeed nothing but reverence and veneration for the Noble Qur’an. Yet we must ask: Was this reverence and veneration hidden from the first generation—the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?
