Kayfa Nastafid min al-Kutub al-Hadithiyah al-SittahAbd al-Muhsin al-‘Abbad
  1. Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī
Imam al-Bukhārī’s Ṣaḥīḥ is the most authentic book of the Sunnah. Its contents are fully-connected narrations traced back to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Al-Bukhārī intended his compilation to be a work of understanding as well as transmission—a book of ḥadith and jurisprudence together. For that reason he adopted a method that distinguishes him from Imam Muslim: he breaks the ḥadiths up, distributes them under various chapter headings, and cites each placement as proof for the legal issue stated in the title. Although this results in the same ḥadith appearing in more than one place, each repetition yields some benefit for either the chain of transmission or the text itself. When al-Bukhārī repeats a report, he quotes it from a different teacher, thereby demonstrating its multiple lines of transmission. The narrations he reproduces with exactly the same chain and wording are extremely few—only a little over twenty—as al-Ḥāfiẓ (Ibn Ḥajar) points out in Fatḥ al-Bārī (11/340) and as listed in Kashf al-Ẓunūn (/363).
