devoted himself to preparing Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim for publication and to compiling several detailed indices for it. Through his efforts the work appeared in four volumes, in which he inserted the chapter headings composed by Imām al-Nawawī—may Allah have mercy on him—even though these were not part of Muslim’s original compilation. He also numbered the primary hadiths, bringing them to a total of (3033). The entirety of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim is thus arranged under fifty-four books. Shaykh Muḥammad Fuʾād ʿAbd al-Bāqī subsequently produced a fifth volume containing the various detailed indices to Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim—may Allah have mercy on him. The highest chains of transmission in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim are quaternary isnāds, consisting of only four narrators between Imām Muslim and the Prophet.
