—may Allah have mercy on him—1 and in this edition the hadith numbering system prepared by Shaykh Muḥammad Fuʾād ʿAbd al-Bāqī has been retained. His procedure is to list, at the very first place where a particular hadith appears, the numbers of all the other locations in which it will subsequently recur. When the hadith later surfaces in those passages, however, he gives no indication of the initial entry where the cross-reference was made. One can find that first occurrence by consulting Ibn Ḥajar’s commentary on the hadith, for he often points to the earlier sites. It can also be located through Ridwān Muḥammad Ridwān’s “Indices to al-Bukhārī,” for when he reaches a place where the hadith is repeated he writes, “See such-and-such, no. so-and-so,” thereby indicating the book in which the hadith was first mentioned.
