The way each of the Most Beautiful Names refers to the Divine Essence operates through three modes—muṭābaqa (complete correspondence), taḍammun (implication), and iltizām (necessary entailment).
Fifth: Any single one of His Names carries several layers of signification:
• It denotes both the Essence and the specific attribute in full correspondence (muṭābaqa).
• It may indicate either the Essence or the attribute on its own by implication (taḍammun).
• It further points to a different, related attribute by necessary entailment (iltizām).⦗2⦘
(2) Take, for example, the divine name al-Hayy (the Living): it simultaneously points to the Essence and to the attribute of life in an explicit way. It can also refer, by implication, either to the Essence alone or to the attribute of life alone, and by necessary implication it suggests other attributes—such as power, hearing, sight, and knowledge. Direct indication is a term for a word’s denoting the whole of its meaning; implication is its denoting part of that meaning; and necessary implication is its denoting something that lies outside the lexical meaning itself.
