whose nobility has reached its limit⦗1⦘.”
Ikrimah said, “The one above whom there is no one⦗2⦘.”
Al-Zajjāj likewise said, “He to whom mastery culminates; to Him everything has turned⦗3⦘.”
Ibn al-Anbārī stated, “There is no difference among the linguists that al-Ṣamad is the master above whom there is no one, the one to whom people repair for their needs and affairs⦗4⦘.”
Its very derivation points to this, for it is drawn from the ideas of gathering and directing oneself. He⦗5⦘ is the one toward whom intentions converge, and in whom all the qualities of mastery are united. This is its original sense in the language, as the poet said⦗6⦘:

وقال عكرمة: "الذي ليس فوقه أحد"٢.
وكذلك قال الزجاج: "الذى ينتهي إليه السؤدد ففد صمد له كل شيء"٣.
وقال ابن الأنبارى: "لا خلاف بين أهل اللغة أنَّ الصمد السيد الذي ليس فوقه أحد الذي يصمد إليه الناس في حوائجهم وأمورهم"٤ واشتقاقه يدل على هذا، فإنَّه من الجمع والقصد، فهو٥ الذي اجتمع القصد نحوه، واجتمعت فيه صفات السؤدد، وهذا أصله في اللغة كما قال٦:
