Qāʿidah fī Ṭāʿat al-WulātIbn Taimiya

Al-Bukhari and Muslim relate, on the authority of ʿAli—may Allah be pleased with him—that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, dispatched a detachment and appointed a man as their commander. The commander lit a fire and ordered, “Enter it!” Some of the people were ready to comply, while others said, “We fled from the Fire!” When the matter was brought before the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, he said to those who had intended to enter, “Had you gone into it, you would have remained there until the Day of Resurrection.” Then he spoke kindly to the others and said, “There is no obedience in disobedience to Allah; obedience is only in what is right.” 1
