Qāʿidah fī al-Inghimās fī al-ʿAdūIbn Taimiya

15- He ﷺ also said: “The fighter in Allah’s cause is the one who strives against his own soul for Allah.”¹

16- Likewise he said: “The believer is the person whom others trust with their lives and their property; the emigrant is the one who abandons whatever Allah has forbidden; and the Muslim is he from whose tongue and hand the Muslims remain safe.”²

17- Striving in the path of Allah comprises many different forms…³

(1) Reported by Ahmad, nos. 20 and 22; al-Tirmidhi, no. 1621, who graded it “hasan sahih”; Ibn Hibban, no. 4706; al-Tabarani, 18/309, no. 797; al-Qudai in Musnad al-Shihab, no. 184; and Ibn Abi Asim in al-Jihad, no. 175, all through the narration of Fadala b. Ubayd. The same sentence also occurs in another hadith of Fadala b. Ubayd, cited below by Ahmad (3/154) and Ibn Hibban (no. 510). (2) Concerning the wording in question, the author of al-Siyasa al-Sharʿiyya (p. 42) states: “Part of it is rigorously authentic in the two Sahihs, and part of it was declared authentic by al-Tirmidhi.” • Al-Bukhari (no. 10) records from Abd Allah b. ʿAmr: “A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe.” • Al-Tirmidhi (no. 2627) transmits from Abu Hurayra: “A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe, and a believer is the one whom people trust regarding their lives and possessions,” grading it “hasan sahih.” • Ahmad (6/21–22), al-Hakim (1/10–11), Ibn Hibban (no. 4862) and Abu Yaʿla (7/199, no. 4187) relate—through Fadala b. Ubayd—that the Prophet ﷺ said during the Farewell Pilgrimage: “Shall I tell you who the believer is? It is the one whom people trust concerning their lives and wealth; the Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand people are safe; the mujahid is he who strives against his own soul in obedience to Allah; and the muhajir is he who abandons sins and offenses.” • Ibn Hibban (no. 510) and al-Hakim (1/11)—with Ibn Hajar authenticating it in Fath al-Bari (1/54)—narrate from Anas: “...and a believer is the one whom people trust regarding their wealth and lives; the Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand people are safe; and the mujahid is he who abandons evil.” (3) The manuscript leaves a blank space here, above which is written the word “katha” (so-and-so).
