Striving with the Hand, Heart, and Tongue
9- Jihad may also be undertaken with the hand, the heart, and the tongue.
10- As the Prophet ﷺ said: “Strive against the polytheists with your hands, your tongues, and your wealth.”¹
11- He likewise said in an authentic narration: “In Medina there are men who, whenever you set out on a march or crossed a valley, were with you; only an excuse kept them behind.”²
(1) Reported by Abu Dawud (no. 2504), al-Darimi (2/280), Ahmad (3/124, 251), al-Bayhaqi (2/6; 9/20) and al-Hakim (2/91), who judged it sahih according to Muslim’s criteria, all through Anas b. Malik with the wording: “with your wealth, your lives and your tongues.” Ahmad also transmits it (3/153) as: “with your tongues, your lives, your wealth and your hands.” Al-Nasa’i records it in al-Kubra (3/6) and al-Mujtaba (6/7) with the wording: “Strive against the polytheists with your wealth, your hands and your tongues.” Ibn Hibban (no. 4708) and Abu Ya‘la (6/468) have: “with your hands and your tongues.”
Benefit: Al-Mundhiri remarks that “with your tongues” may refer to satirical poetry, supported by the phrase, “for it is swifter among them than arrows,” yet it may also mean urging people to engage in jihad, encouraging them and explaining its merits. See al-Suyuti’s commentary on al-Nasa’i (6/7).
Shams al-Haqq al-Abadi explains: “According to Subul, the hadith proves the obligation of jihad: with one’s self, i.e. by personally confronting the unbelievers; with one’s wealth, by spending on provisions, weaponry and the like; and with one’s tongue, by establishing the proof against them, calling them to Allah, rebuking them—indeed, by every verbal means that weakens the enemy. ‘And they do not inflict any harm upon an enemy but it is recorded for them as a righteous deed’ (Q 9:120).” See ‘Awn al-Ma‘bud (7/182).
(2) Al-Bukhari (4423) and Muslim (1911/159) on the authority of Anas b. Malik.
The author comments: “He informed us that the one who remained in Madinah, prevented only by a valid excuse, is equal to those who took part in the expedition. It is known that every participant in the campaign receives the reward of a combatant in proportion to his intention; likewise, those who stayed behind but were held back only by an excuse share that reward. The same principle is found in the sound report of Abu Musa in the two Sahihs: the Prophet said, ‘When the servant falls ill or travels, the reward of whatever good he used to do while healthy and resident is recorded for him.’”
