Striving with Life and Wealth
5- Jihad is also carried out with one’s own life and one’s wealth.1
6- As the Exalted says: “And strive with your wealth and your lives in the path of Allah.” (Q 9:41)2
7- It may likewise be undertaken in other ways, such as by providing financial support.
8- As established in the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections, the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever equips a combatant has himself fought, and whoever cares for his family in his absence with goodness has himself fought.”3
(1) The author, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “Military expedition requires jihad with one’s person and with one’s property. When one participant offers his body and another his wealth, while each of them possesses a firm and resolute intention, then each is deemed a mujahid according to that firm intention and the extent of his ability. Likewise, the fighter needs someone to act as his deputy among his family; if someone replaces him and looks after his household properly, he too is counted as a combatant.” Majmuʿ al-Fatawa, 10/722.
(2) The original manuscript contains a mistake in the Qurʾanic verse, which was written as: “And strive in the path of Allah with your wealth and your selves.”
(3) Al-Bukhari 2843 and Muslim 1895 (135), on the authority of Zayd ibn Khalid al-Juhani, may Allah be pleased with him.
Imam al-Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, commented: “That is, he obtains the reward associated with the expedition. This reward applies to every form of jihad, whether small or great, and to anyone who remains behind to benefit the combatant’s family by fulfilling their needs, spending on them, or assisting them in their affairs; the magnitude of the reward varies with the extent of that help. The hadith encourages kindness toward anyone who renders a service to the Muslims or undertakes an important communal task.”
Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “Concerning the phrase ‘he has fought,’ Ibn Hibban explained that it means the supporter shares the fighter’s reward even though he did not actually go to battle. Ibn Hibban also transmitted, through another chain from Busr ibn Saʿid, the wording: ‘The like of his reward is written for him without any reduction in the fighter’s reward.’ Ibn Majah and Ibn Hibban likewise report, from the hadith of ʿUmar, a parallel wording: ‘Whoever equips a warrior until he is fully supplied shall have a reward equal to his until the warrior dies or returns.’ This yields two points: first, the promised reward is conditioned on completing the outfitting, which is the meaning of ‘until he is fully supplied’; second, the supporter equals the combatant in reward until that particular campaign ends.” Fath al-Bari, 6/50.
