He replied, “My Lord and yours is Allah.”

The King’s Companion Is Tortured and Informs on the Boy

So the king seized him and continued to torture him until he gave away the boy’s identity, and the boy was brought in.

The king said to him, “My son, your sorcery has reached the point where you heal the congenitally blind and the leper—you do this and you do that.”

The boy answered, “I heal no one; it is Allah who heals.”

The king then seized him and went on torturing him until he directed them to the monk¹.

The monk was brought in and told, “Renounce your faith.” He refused. The king called for a saw, placed it on the center of the monk’s head, and cut him in two until his halves fell apart.

Next the king’s companion was brought and told, “Renounce your faith.” He too refused, so the saw was set at the center of his head and he was split in two, each half falling away.

Finally the boy was brought and told, “Renounce your faith.” He refused, so the king handed him over to a group of his men

(1) Point of benefit: Abu al-Abbas al-Qurtubi said, “If someone asks how the boy’s action—directing the authorities to the monk, which led to the monk’s execution—could be permissible in our Sacred Law, the answer is that the boy was not legally accountable (mukallaf) because he had not yet reached puberty. Even if we conceded that he was accountable, his excuse is that he did not know the monk would be killed; therefore, the killing cannot be imputed to his indication.” Al-Mufhim, 7/425.
