Among the causes of humiliation in this world and the enemy’s domination

106 – When people abandon the duty Allah has laid upon them and instead occupy themselves with whatever distracts them from it—namely, the pursuit of worldly prosperity—they are ruined in this life through humiliation¹ and the enemy’s subjugation: he seizes their very persons, their children, and their wealth; he drives them away from their religion; and they become incapable of practicing the faith—or even of cultivating worldly life. Their zeal for religion grows listless, and their very beliefs become unsound.

107 – Allah says: “They will not cease fighting you until they turn you back from your religion—if they can. And whoever among you turns back from his religion and dies as an unbeliever, such people have wasted their deeds in this world and the Hereafter; they will be the companions of the Fire, abiding therein forever” (Al-Baqarah 2:217).

108 – The same holds true for all the other evils that beset any nation which fails to fight its enemy, be it Muslim or unbeliever.

109 – For every nation that refuses to fight is fated to suffer grievous destruction through overwhelming domination—

(1) Al-Bukhari, Ṣaḥīḥ, 2321, chapter: “What is to be feared from the consequences of preoccupation with farming implements or of exceeding the limit that has been prescribed.” He narrates with his chain from Abu Umamah, who, on seeing a plough and some farming gear, said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘No house admits this without Allah bringing humiliation upon it.’” A report with the same purport is related from Ibn Umar: “I heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘When you practice bayʿ al-ʿīnah (the usurious sale), take hold of the tails of cattle, become satisfied with cultivation, and abandon jihad, Allah will impose upon you a humiliation that He will not lift until you return to your religion.’” Reported by Ahmad (4825, 5007) and Abu Dawud (3462) with two good isnads, as noted by the author in Majmuʿ al-Fatāwa, 29/30; see also al-Albani, al-Ṣaḥīḥah, 13.
