84 – They have said that the command in this verse to persevere against an enemy force twice one’s own number1 abrogates the earlier command to persevere against ten times one’s number2.

85 – It is answered: All that can be inferred is that persevering against more than double one’s number is no longer obligatory; nothing in the verse suggests that it is not recommended or that it is impermissible.

(1) The base manuscript reads: “al-daʿif” (weak). (2) The Maliki scholar Abu Bakr ibn al-Arabi said: “In the divine words al-ana khaffafa Allahu ʿankum wa ʿalima anna fikum daʿfan (‘Now Allah has lightened your burden and knows that there is weakness among you’), the weakness meant is not physical strength but a weakness of resolve to fight the polytheists; accordingly, Allah fixed the legal duty of the whole community at the level of its weakest members. ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿud remarked: ‘I never imagined that any Muslim fought for other than Allah until He revealed: minkum man yuridu al-dunya wa minkum man yuridu al-akhirah (“Among you are those who desire the present world and among you are those who desire the Hereafter”).’ The first Muslims had such pure intentions, but when people who fought for worldly gain joined them, Allah set one standard for all. This verse also proves wrong those who deny the existence of naskh (abrogation) in the Prophet’s law, for Allah says: al-ana khaffafa Allahu ʿankum … fa-in yakun minkum miʾatun sabiratun yaghlibu miʾatayni (‘Now Allah has lightened your burden … if there are among you one hundred steadfast, they will overcome two hundred’); easing can occur only by removing part of an obligation or by substituting it with a lighter one. Hence, the second verse abrogates the first ruling. Some object that the verse contains merely a conditional promise, not a command, and that each community is only required to show patience in proportion to its ability: the earliest Muslims were charged with twenty resisting two hundred, while the later Muslims—whose insight was not as sharp—were charged with one resisting two and a hundred resisting two hundred. They maintain that neither ratio constitutes a fixed duty; what is obligatory is steadfastness according to one’s capacity, which differs among people, and therefore, they say, no abrogation is involved. Ibn al-Arabi replies that this view is deeply flawed and self-contradictory, departing from the consensus of the Muslim community, past and present. All transmitters and exegetes agree that the original rule in early Islam was one man against ten, and that the verse in which Allah says: in yakun minkum ʿishruna sabiruna yaghlibu miʾatayni (‘If there are among you twenty steadfast, they will overcome two hundred’)—although …” (the quotation ends here).
