Qāʿidah fī al-Inghimās fī al-ʿAdūIbn Taimiya

Another proof from the Sunnah
72 – Moreover, the Sunan collections transmit that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Our Lord marvels at two sorts of men:
A man who rises from the comfort of his bed, leaving his wife and household, in order to perform the prayer. Allah then says to His angels, ‘Look at My servant—he has risen from his bed, his couch, and from his family and kin to perform the prayer, desiring what is with Me and fearing what is with Me.’
And a man who goes out to fight in Allah’s cause: he and his comrades retreat, then he realizes the blame attached to fleeing and the reward for returning, so he turns back until his blood is shed. Allah says to His angels, ‘Look at My servant—he has returned, desiring what is with Me and fearing what is with Me, until his blood was spilled.’” ⦗1⦘
73 – Thus this man first fled with his companions, then returned alone, fought, and was killed.

(1) Narrated by Ahmad (1/416), Abu Dawud (2536), Ibn Abi Asim in al-Sunnah (569) and in al-Jihad, and by al-Bayhaqi (9/46, 164). Al-Hakim (2/112) and Ibn Hibban (2558) declared it authentic, all on the authority of Ibn Masud. Al-Haythami remarks in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid (2/255): “It was transmitted by Ahmad, Abu Yaʿla and al-Tabarani; its chain is sound, and al-Tabarani also records it in al-Kabir with a similar wording, mawquf.” Al-Daraqutni, in al-ʿIlal (5/267), authenticated the mawquf version attributed to Ibn Masud. Al-Albani graded it hasan in Sahih Abi Dawud (2/106). Shaykh Ibn al-Nahhas, in the chapter entitled “The merit of a courageous man—or a small group—plunging into a larger enemy force seeking martyrdom and harming the enemy,” adds: “If this sound hadith were the only text on the subject, it would suffice to prove the virtue of such an action” (Mashariʿ al-Ashwaq, 1/532).
