The Story of Khubayb ibn ʿAdiyy and His Companions
65- Al-Bukhari relates in his Ṣaḥīḥ1, on the authority of Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out ten men as a scouting party and placed ʿĀsim ibn Thābit al-Anṣārī—the grandfather of ʿĀsim ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb2—in command of them.
They set off, and when they reached al-Hadāʾ3, a spot between ʿUsfān4 and Mecca, word of them reached a branch of Hudhayl called Banū Liḥyān5.
So the tribe hurried out after them with nearly one hundred archers—another wording says: two hundred men—tracking their footprints until they came upon the dates the party had eaten at a campsite they had occupied. They said, “These are the dates of Yathrib.”6
1 Al-Bukhari, nos. 3045, 3989, 4086, 7402. All explanations of unusual vocabulary are taken from Fath al-Bari, 7/379–385, except where I have signalled otherwise.
2 On the phrase “he found Asim the son of Umar”: al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar comments, “Asim b. Thabit has been described as the maternal grandfather of Asim b. Umar b. al-Khattab; this is a mistake by one of the transmitters, for Asim b. Thabit was actually Asim b. Umar’s maternal uncle, not his grandfather. Asim’s mother was Jamila bt. Thabit, the sister of Asim; her original name was Asiya, and the Prophet changed it.”
3 On the word “bil-huda’ah”: the al-Akbar recension vocalises it with a sukun on the dal followed by a fully pronounced hamza; the Kushmihani transmission has a fathah on the dal with the hamza eased; Ibn Ishaq records al-huddah, with a doubled dal and no alif, adding, “It lies seven miles from Asfan.”
4 The manuscript reads “Asfan”; the correct reading, adopted here and found in al-Bukhari, is the one printed above.
5 On the phrase “they are called Banu Lihyan”: the lam in Lihyan may be read with a kasrah—some read it with a fathah—and the ha is quiescent. Lihyan is the very son of Hudhayl, and Hudhayl is the son of Madrakah b. Ilyas b. Mudar.
6 The manuscript erroneously has “yahnū Yathrib”; the wording adopted here follows the reading in al-Bukhari.
