- And He has also declared that they have no patron or helper apart from Allah.
Cowardly flight is one of the major sins
56- In His Book He has clarified that fleeing from battle out of cowardice is counted among the grave sins that lead to the Fire⦗1⦘, for He said: “O you who believe! When you meet the disbelievers advancing in battle, do not turn your backs on them. Whoever turns his back on them on that day—unless it be a tactical maneuver or a withdrawal toward another unit—has incurred the wrath of Allah, and his abode is Hell; what an evil destination!” ⦗8:15–16⦘
(1) A useful remark: The scholar Ibn al-Qayyim said, “The Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge with Allah from cowardice, and cowardice is a blameworthy trait in everyone’s eyes. Those who are cowardly harbor bad thoughts about Allah, whereas the brave and the generous are people of good opinion of Him. One sage advised: ‘Stay close to the open-handed and the courageous, for they are the ones who think well of Allah.’ Courage is a shield that protects a person from hardships, while cowardice assists his enemy against him—it is an army and a weapon that one hands over to his foe to be fought with. The Arabs used to say: ‘Courage is protection, cowardice is ruin.’ Allah has disproved the vain hopes of cowards who imagine that their timidity will save them from killing or death, saying: ‘Say: Flight will not benefit you if you flee from death or killing’ (Surah al-Ahzab 33:16) …
Observe the conduct of warfare: more people are killed while retreating than while advancing.
In his directive to Khalid ibn al-Walid, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq wrote: ‘Seek death and life will be granted to you.’
Khalid ibn al-Walid said: ‘I took part in so many battles in the pre-Islamic era and in Islam, and there is no place on my body without a spear thrust or a sword blow, yet here I am dying on my bed. May the eyes of the cowards never sleep!’ There is no doubt for any rational person that meeting death head-on when it arrives is better than turning one’s back to it. Allah knows best.” Al-Furusiyya, pp. 491–493.
