Qāʿidah fī al-Inghimās fī al-ʿAdūIbn Taimiya

and returns with none of it.1

40- In another wording: “his horse is hamstrung and his blood is spilled.”2

41- In the Sunan collections, on the authority of ʿAbdullah ibn Hubshi, it is reported that the Prophet ﷺ was asked, “Which deed is best?” He replied, “Lengthy standing (in prayer).” They said, “Which charity is best?” He answered, “The offering made by one who possesses little.” They asked, “Which migration is best?” He said, “To abandon what Allah has forbidden.” They said, “Which jihad is best?”3 He replied, “The one who strives against the polytheists with his life and his wealth.” They asked, “Which form of killing is most noble?” He said, “The one whose blood is shed and whose horse is slain.”4

(1) Al-Bukhari (no. 969) records the wording: “No deeds carried out on any days are better than those done during these ten days.” They asked, “Not even jihad?” He replied, “Not even jihad—except for a man who goes out, staking his life and wealth, and returns with nothing.” The same wording is given by al-Tirmidhi (no. 757); al-Tirmidhi graded it “hasan sahih gharib” and added: “Similar reports are narrated from Ibn Umar, Abu Hurayrah, and Abd Allah b. Amr.” (2) Al-Tabarani, al-Saghir, no. 889; al-Awsat, no. 6696. (3) The passage enclosed in square brackets is an addition drawn from the hadith sources to make the context flow smoothly. (4) Reported by Abu Dawud (no. 1449); al-Nasa’i in al-Kubra (2/32) and in al-Mujtaba (5/59); and by Ibn Majah (no. 2794) in abridged form. Al-Albani declared it sound in Sahih Abi Dawud (1/399). Regarding the expression juhd al-muqill (“the utmost effort of one who has little”), Ibn al-Athir observes that the term juhd/jahd frequently occurs in hadith: with damma (ju-hd) it means “capacity or ability,” while with fatha (ja-hd) it denotes “hardship”; some hold that both forms can convey “capacity,” but when the sense is specifically “hardship” only the fatha form is used (al-Nihaya, 1/320).
