18- …in Allah’s cause; what differentiates the two is one’s intention and adherence to the Sacred Law.
19- As recorded in the Sunan from Mu‘adh, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Expedition is of two kinds. Whoever seeks Allah’s Face, obeys the leader, spends what is precious, and avoids corruption—his sleep and his wakefulness are all reward.¹ But whoever goes forth for pride, ostentation, and reputation, disobeys the leader, and sows corruption in the land, will not return with even what suffices.²"
(1) Reported by Ahmad (5/234); Abu Dawud (no. 2515); al-Nasa’i in al-Sunan al-kubra (no. 8730) and in al-Mujtaba (6/49; 7/155); al-Tabarani in al-Mu‘jam al-kabir (20/91-92) and in Musnad al-Shamiyyin (no. 1159); al-Hakim (no. 8512); al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan (9/168) and in Shu‘ab al-iman (no. 4265); and Ibn Abi ‘Asim in al-Jihad (no. 133). Malik also transmits it in the Muwatta’ (2/466, no. 998) through Yahya b. Sa‘id from Mu‘adh b. Jabal as a mawquf report. Al-Albani graded it hasan in al-Silsila al-sahiha (no. 1990).
Benefit: Al-Zarqani comments: “tanfaqu fihi al-karima—i.e., the choicest of one’s wealth. It may mean wealth that is lawful and untainted, free of anything dubious. It could also refer to spending generously if the phrase concerns personal expenses and charity. Alternatively, al-karima may designate the best of one’s possessions: for instance, going on campaign with one’s finest and fastest horse, or with superior weapons and equipment. In that case, spending in the path of Allah includes purchasing such items for that purpose and using them until the horse dies and the equipment is worn out. Likewise, the combatant may dedicate the finest of what he owns for the cause of Allah.” Al-Muntaqa Sharh al-Muwatta’.
(2) The base manuscript reads “his day,” but it has been corrected to “his sleep”; this emendation, as well as the material in brackets, is confirmed by the sources cited in the hadith documentation.
