Al-ʿAllāmah Ibn al-Hajj states in al-Madkhal ⦗283⦘:
“The established sunnah for the two ʿId prayers is that they be performed in the muṣallā (open prayer ground), for the Prophet ﷺ said:
‘A single prayer in this mosque of mine is better than a thousand prayers in any other mosque, except the Sacred Mosque.’¹
Yet, despite this tremendous merit, he ﷺ still left his own mosque and went out to the muṣallā. This is an unequivocal proof that going out to the prayer ground for the ʿId prayers is emphatically prescribed and that it is the sunnah. Holding the two ʿId prayers inside the mosque, according to the school of Mālik (d. 179 AH), is an innovation—unless a genuine necessity demands it, in which case it is not an innovation—because the Prophet ﷺ never did so, nor did any of the Rightly Guided Caliphs after him. Moreover, he ﷺ instructed the women to come out for the ʿId prayers, even commanding menstruating women and sequestered maidens to attend. One of them said, ‘Messenger of Allah, what if one of us does not have a jilbāb (outer cloak)?’ He ﷺ replied:”} (end)
