3- Once you realize that Allah created you for His worship, understand that an act is not truly called worship unless it is joined with tawḥīd (pure monotheism), just as a prayer is not deemed a proper prayer unless it is accompanied by ritual purity. Therefore, if shirk (polytheism) enters into an act of worship, it corrupts it, just as a state of ḥadath (ritual impurity) nullifies purification.
…as for the revealed laws—the commands and prohibitions, the permitted and the forbidden—these differ from one nation to another according to its needs. Allah legislates a law and later abrogates it with another until the law of Islam arrived; it annulled all previous laws and will remain in force until the Hour is established. The essence of the prophets’ religion, however—tawhid (pure monotheism)—has never been abrogated and never will be. Their religion is one: Islam, meaning exclusive devotion to Allah through tawhid. Particular laws may vary and be abrogated, yet tawhid and creed have been the same from Adam to the last prophet; all of them summoned people to tawhid and to the worship of Allah. Worshipping Allah is to obey Him at every moment according to the legislation in force; once a ruling is abrogated, acting on the abrogating ruling constitutes worship, whereas acting on the abrogated ruling is no longer worship.
(3) “So when you know that Allah created you to worship Him”—that is, when you grasp the meaning of the verse, “I did not create the jinn and humankind except to worship Me” (surah adh-Dhariyat, 56), and realize that, as a human being, you are included in this verse; when you understand that Allah did not create you for nothing, nor merely so that you could eat and drink, roam about and amuse yourself—He did not create you for that. Allah created you for His worship, and He has subjected all existing things to you so that you might use them to assist you in worshipping Him, for you cannot live without these things and cannot reach the worship of Allah except through them. He placed them at your disposal so that you worship Him, not so that you take delight in them, roam freely, fall into sin and immorality, eating and drinking whatever you fancy—that is the way of cattle. Human beings, by contrast, were created by Allah, exalted be He, for a grand purpose and profound wisdom, namely…
