…the martyrs. Allah’s believing servants were tried, yet they remained patient. Concerning the hypocrite, however, Allah says: “Among the people is he who worships Allah upon an edge”—that is, on the fringe—“so if good befalls him, he is content with it, but if a trial strikes him, he turns back on his face; he loses both this world and the Hereafter—that is the evident loss” (al-Hajj 11). This world is not perpetually comfort, luxury, pleasure, happiness, and victory. Allah alternates its states among His servants. The Companions—the best generation—endured severe trials and tests. Allah the Exalted said: “Those days We alternate among the people” (Al-Imran 140). Hence a servant must prepare himself: when he is afflicted, he should realize that the trial is not unique to him; it has already touched Allah’s friends. He steadies himself, exercises patience, and awaits relief from Allah—exalted be He—for in the end the outcome belongs to the God-fearing.
He said: “and when he sins, he seeks forgiveness.” As for one who, after sinning, does not ask forgiveness but only increases his sins, he is wretched—Allah’s refuge is sought. The believing servant, by contrast, hastens to repent whenever he commits a sin: “Those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins—who but Allah forgives sins?” (Al-Imran 135); and: “Repentance that Allah accepts is only from those who commit evil in ignorance, then repent soon after” (al-Nisa 17). Here “ignorance” does not mean lack of knowledge, for the uninformed is not held accountable; rather, it is the opposite of forbearance. Everyone who disobeys Allah is ignorant in the sense of being deficient in self-restraint, intellect, and humanity. He may be learned, yet still ignorant because he lacks composure and firmness. “Then they repent soon after” means that whenever they sin, they seek forgiveness. No one is immune from sin, but praise be to Allah who has opened the gate of repentance. Therefore, when the servant sins he must hasten to repent; but if he does not—
