Introduction by Shaykh al-Islam Muhammad b. ʿAbd al-Wahhab
The author—may Allah have mercy on him—said:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
1- I ask Allah the Most Generous, Lord of the Mighty Throne, to protect you in this world and the Hereafter, to make you blessed wherever you are, and to make you one of those who, when given, show gratitude; when tested, show patience; and when they sin, seek forgiveness—for these three qualities are the hallmarks of true happiness.
(1) The “Four Principles” authored by Shaykh al-Islam Muhammad b. Abd al-Wahhab, may Allah have mercy on him, form an independent treatise, yet they are usually printed together with “The Three Fundamentals” so that students of knowledge can readily consult them. The word “principles” (qawaid) is the plural of qaida, meaning a foundational rule from which many questions—or many subsidiary rulings—branch out. The content of these four principles, as the Shaykh explains, is the correct understanding of tawhid (pure monotheism) and shirk (polytheism). Hence the inquiry: what is the basic rule concerning tawhid and what is the basic rule concerning shirk? Many people are confused about these two matters, vacillating over the meaning of tawhid and over the meaning of shirk, each interpreting them according to his own whim. قال المؤلف رحمه الله تعالى:

١- أسأل الله الكريم ربّ العرش العظيم أن يتولاّك في الدنيا والآخرة، وأن يجعلك مبارَكًا أينما كنت، وأن يجعلك ممّن إذا أُعطيَ شكر، وإذا ابتُلي صبر، وإذا أذنب استغفر، فإنّ هؤلاء الثلاث عنوان السعادة.
١- هذه "القواعد الأربع" التي ألّفها شيخ الإسلام محمد بن عبد الوهّاب ﵀.
هي رسالة مستقلّة، ولكنها تُطبع مع "ثلاثة الأصول" من أجل الحاجة إليها لتكون في متناول أيدي طلبة العلم.
والقواعد: جمع قاعدة، والقاعدة هي: الأصل الذي يتفرّع عنه مسائل كثيرة – أو فروعٌ كثيرة-.
ومضمون هذه القواعد الأربع التي ذكرها الشيخ ﵀: معرفة التوحيد ومعرفة الشرك.
وما هي القاعدة في التوحيد؟ وما هي القاعدة في الشرك؟، لأنّ كثيراً من الناس يتخبطون في هذين الأمرين، يتخبّطون في معنى التوحيد ما هو؟ ويتخبّطون في معنى الشرك، كلٌّ يفسرهما على حسب هواه.
