- The second principle: They say, “We only called upon them and turned toward them to seek closeness and intercession.” The evidence for seeking closeness is the Almighty’s statement: “And those who take protectors besides Him say, ‘We worship them only so that they may bring us nearer to Allah.’ Surely Allah will judge between them regarding that over which they differ. Indeed, Allah does not guide anyone who is a liar and a persistent disbeliever.” (al-Zumar: 3)
—they readily admit this fact. Consequently, tawhid is not simply acknowledging the oneness of Lordship (tawhid al-rububiyya) as the scholastic theologians and speculative thinkers state in their creeds. They define tawhid as confessing that Allah alone creates, provides, gives life and causes death, and they summarise it in the formula: “One in His essence with no partner, one in His attributes with no equal, one in His actions with no associate.” This is no more than tawhid al-rububiyya. Consult any work of the scholastic theologians and you will see that they never move beyond this aspect of tawhid. Yet this is not the tawhid for which Allah sent the messengers, and affirming it by itself does not benefit a person, for the idolaters and the chief disbelievers already affirmed it, and it neither removed them from unbelief nor brought them into Islam. This is a grave mistake: whoever holds this notion has added nothing to the creed of Abu Jahl and Abu Lahab. Many contemporary “intellectuals” likewise restrict themselves to establishing tawhid al-rububiyya and never address tawhid al-uluhiyya (the oneness of worship); this is a serious misunderstanding of the very meaning of tawhid.
As for shirk, they say: “It is to believe that someone creates or provides sustenance alongside Allah.” We reply: Abu Jahl and Abu Lahab never claimed that anyone creates or provides with Allah; rather, they acknowledged that Allah alone is the Creator, the Provider, the Giver of life and death.
