Shirk: The Most Important Knowledge for the Servant
Introduction
...
Once you realize that when shirk (polytheism) infiltrates an act of worship it corrupts that act, nullifies every deed, and leaves its perpetrator among those who will abide forever in the Fire, you will understand that your greatest duty is to learn about it. In this way, Allah may rescue you from this trap—associating partners with Him—about which He, exalted is He, has said: “Indeed, Allah does not forgive that partners be associated with Him, but He forgives anything short of that for whomever He wills” [al-Nisāʾ: 116]. This protection comes through grasping four principles that Allah, exalted be He, has outlined in His Book:
(4) “So once you realise that when shirk infiltrates any act of worship it corrupts it, nullifies the deed, and condemns its doer to eternal fire …” — that is, since you already know tawhid, namely dedicating all worship exclusively to Allah, you must now learn what shirk is. A person who is ignorant of a matter is prone to fall into it; therefore you must become familiar with the various forms of shirk in order to avoid them. Allah has warned against it, saying: “Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives anything less than that for whom He wills” (al-Nisaʾ 4:48). Such is the danger of shirk: it bars one from Paradise — “Whoever associates partners with Allah, Allah has forbidden Paradise to him” (al-Maʾida 5:72) — and it blocks forgiveness: “Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him” (al-Nisaʾ 4:48).
Thus shirk is an immense peril that you must recognise before all others, for many minds have gone astray concerning it. We are therefore obliged to identify shirk through the Quran and the sunnah. Allah never warns against something without clarifying it, nor commands something without explaining it. He did not prohibit shirk and then leave the matter undefined; rather, He set it out unambiguously in the Noble Quran, and the Messenger — peace be upon him — elucidated it comprehensively in the sunnah. Consequently, when we seek to understand shirk we must return to the Quran and the sunnah, not to the opinions of so-and-so; further details will follow.
