Sunnat al-Jumu'aIbn Taimiya

With regard to these sunan rawātib—the regular sunnah prayers—people hold three views:

  1. One group fixes no specific number at all. This was the position of Mālik, who recognized no sunnah prayer except Witr and the two rakʿahs before Fajr, and he would say, “Only the people of Iraq stipulate fixed numbers.”
  2. Another group assigns precise quantities on the strength of hadiths that are weak—indeed spurious. This appears in the schools of the Iraqis and in some of those who agreed with them among the followers of al-Shāfiʿī and Aḥmad. Their books contain set numbers of prayers and reports about them that anyone versed in the sunnah knows are fabricated against the Prophet ﷺ—for example, the narration that he prayed four rakʿahs before the ʿAṣr prayer.
