for performing a prayer before Jumuʿah, citing his statement, “Between every two calls there is a prayer.” Others, however, replied that the adhan proclaimed from the minarets did not exist in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; rather, ʿUthmān introduced it when the population had increased during his caliphate and the people could not hear the single call once he emerged and sat on the pulpit. Nevertheless, it may rightly be said that because ʿUthmān instituted this additional adhan and the Muslims unanimously accepted it, it thereby acquired the status of a legitimate, Sharʿī call to prayer.
