in the relevant hadith she reported both practices from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); the discussion of that is set out in detail elsewhere. What matters for us here is that the sunnah for a traveler is to pray two rak‘ahs, and the jurists unanimously maintain that this is the superior course—with the sole, weak dissenting opinion attributed to al-Shafi‘i. Most of the imams deem it disliked for the traveler to perform the full four-rak‘ah prayer, which is the position of Abu Hanifah, Malik, and—according to the more authoritative of the two reports—Ahmad. Some of them go further and declare that completing four rak‘ahs is not permissible at all, such as Abu Hanifah.
