and it was judged weak by Ahmad and others. The definition of what may rightly be called “prayer” must be taken from the Messenger himself. In the Sunan collections there is the report of ʿAlī, narrating from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):

“The key to prayer is purification; its consecrating prohibition is the takbīr, and its concluding release is the taslīm.”
