Nor may that ḥadīth be cited as proof, and the People of the Scripture have no report that any prophet ever performed ablution in the manner of the Muslims. By contrast, the full ritual bath prescribed for janābah (major ritual impurity) was legislated for them; however, they had no recourse to tayammum (dry ablution) when water was lacking. One of the distinctions by which this community has been favoured is that tayammum replaces both the bath required for janābah and the minor purification of wuḍūʾ.
If it is objected: “Those prophets only prostrated without ablution because prayer was permissible for them without it,”
