Zād al-MustaqniʿAl-Hajjawi

Chapter: The Eclipse Prayer

It is Sunnah to perform this prayer, whether in congregation or alone, whenever either of the two luminaries1 is eclipsed, in two rakʿahs. In the first rakʿah he recites aloud, after al-Fātiḥah, a long surah, then bows for an extended time, rises saying, “Allah hears whoever praises Him,” and praises Allah. He then recites al-Fātiḥah again followed by another long surah, though shorter than the first, bows once more—this time for a slightly shorter duration—rises, and performs two long prostrations.

The second rakʿah is offered like the first, but briefer in every element. He then recites the tashahhud and concludes with the salām.

If the eclipse clears during the prayer, he completes it quickly; and if the sun sets

(1) In manuscript “B”, the reading is: “salla” (he prayed).
