It is likewise valid to hold Jumuʿah in a stretch of desert that adjoins the town’s buildings ⦗1⦘. If the required number falls below forty before the prayer is completed, they must restart it as Zuhr. Whoever catches one full rakʿah with the imam completes the prayer as Jumuʿah; if he catches less than that, he completes it as Zuhr, provided he had intended Zuhr.
Two sermons must precede the prayer. For the sermons to be valid they must include: praising Allah, invoking blessings upon His Messenger Muhammad ﷺ, the recitation of a single verse, an exhortation to fear Allah, and the presence of the stipulated quorum. Ritual purity is not a condition for delivering the sermons, nor must the preacher be the same person who leads the prayer.
Among the recommended practices of the sermons are: delivering them from a pulpit or other elevated place; greeting the congregation when turning to face them; sitting until the adhān is finished and again between the two sermons; preaching while standing and leaning on a sword, bow, or staff; facing straight ahead; keeping the sermon brief; and supplicating for the Muslims.
Sub-section
The Friday prayer is two rakʿahs. It is sunnah to recite aloud Sūrat al-Jumuʿah in the first rakʿah and Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn in the second.
It is unlawful to establish more than one Jumuʿah congregation in the same town except out of necessity. If several are nevertheless held, the valid service is the one the ruler conducts in person—or the one he has authorized. If the two are equal with respect to such authorization, the second is invalid; and if they are held simultaneously, or it is unknown which was performed first, both are invalid.
The minimum sunnah prayer after Jumuʿah is two rakʿahs, and the maximum is six.
