Chapter on Istinjāʾ (ritual cleansing after relieving oneself)
It is recommended that, upon entering the lavatory, one say: “Bi-smi-llāh, aʿūdhu billāhi mina l-khubthi wa-l-khabāʾith” (In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Allah from male and female devils); and upon leaving, “Ghufrānaka, al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī adh-haba ʿannī al-adhā wa ʿāfānī” (Your forgiveness; praise be to Allah who has removed harm from me and granted me well-being). He should step in with his left foot and step out with his right,1 the opposite of entering a mosque or putting on footwear. He should lean on his left foot, keep a distance2 in an open space, conceal himself from view, choose a soft spot for urination, wipe3 with his left hand after finishing—passing it from the base of the penis to the tip three times—then shake it three times, and move to another place so that he performs istinjāʾ4 there if he fears splashing.
It is disliked for him to enter carrying anything that bears the name of Allah unless there is a need; to raise his garment before drawing near to the ground; to speak while inside; to urinate into a crevice or similar place; to touch his private part with his right hand; to perform istinjāʾ or istijmār (dry cleansing with stones or the like) with that hand; and to face either of the two great luminaries, the sun or the moon.
