Excuses that exempt a person from attending the Friday prayer and the congregational prayer1 include: illness; the urgent need to relieve oneself of either urine or feces; being in the presence of food he genuinely needs2; fear that his property might be lost, missed, damaged, or that a close relative may die; fear of personal harm, of oppression by a ruler, of being detained by a creditor when he has nothing with which to repay, or of missing his travelling party3; overpowering drowsiness; hardship brought on by rain and mud, or by a biting, icy wind4 on a dark, cold night5.

(4) The word "shadida" (severe) is missing only from the main manuscript.

وبعذر في ترك١ جمعة وجماعة مريض ومدافع أحد الأخبثين ومن بحضرة طعام محتاج٢ إليه وخائف من ضياع ماله أو فواته أو ضرر فيه أو موت قريبه أو على نفسه من ضرر أو سلطان أو من ملازمة غريم ولا شيء معه أو من فوات رفقته٣ أو غلبة نعاس أو أذى بمطر ووحل وبريح باردة شديدة٤ في ليلة مظلمة باردة٥.
