bowing he says:
“O Allah, guide me among those You have guided; grant me well-being among those You have granted well-being; take me into Your care among those You have taken into Your care; bless for me what You have given; and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. Surely You decree and none can decree against You. No one befriended by You is ever humbled, and no one opposed by You can ever be honored. Blessed and Exalted are You, our Lord.
O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your displeasure, in Your pardon from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in You from You. I cannot1 enumerate praise of You; You are just as You have praised Yourself. O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad2.”
Then he wipes his face with his hands.
It is disliked to perform this qunūt in prayers other than witr, unless a calamity—other than plague—befalls the Muslims; in that case the imam recites qunūt in the obligatory prayers.
The tarāwīḥ consists of twenty rakʿahs and is performed in congregation, together with witr, after the night prayer during Ramadan. One who intends to stand for additional night worship afterward should perform his witr then; if he has already followed his imam in witr, he should make it even by adding one rakʿah. It is disliked to offer voluntary prayers between its cycles, though assembling for extra prayer after it is not disliked.
Next come the regular sunnah prayers: two rakʿahs before Ẓuhr and two after it, two after Maghrib, two after ʿIshāʾ, and two before Fajr—the last two being the most emphatically confirmed. It is recommended in them to recite: “Say, O disbelievers…,” “Say, He is Allah, One…,” “Say, ‘We believe in Allah’…,” and “Say, O People of the Scripture, come to a word….” Whoever misses any of these regular prayers is encouraged to make it up.
Night prayer is superior to daytime prayer, and its best time is the third of the night that comes after its midpoint. Voluntary prayers, whether by night or by day, are offered two by two; yet if one prays four at once during the day, as in the noon prayer, there is no harm. The reward of praying while seated is half that of praying while standing.
