Section: The Expiation of Oaths

Whoever incurs the duty of expiating an oath may choose one of three options: feeding ten needy persons, clothing them, or setting a slave free¹. Anyone who cannot afford one of these must fast for three consecutive days.

If several oaths of the same kind become due before expiation is offered, a single expiation suffices for all of them. But if their causes differ—such as the expiation for zihār (the declaration equating one’s wife with one’s mother) and an oath sworn by Allah—both expiations are obligatory and cannot be merged.
