Section on Hunting
A quarry that has been killed in the course of hunting is lawful to eat only when four conditions are fulfilled.
-
The hunter must be someone eligible to perform ritual slaughter.
-
The implement. Implements are of two kinds:
a) A sharp instrument. It must meet the same requirements as the knife used for slaughter and must cut or pierce the animal; if the animal dies from the instrument’s blunt force, the meat is not permitted. Anything that is not sharp—such as a pellet, a club, a net, or a snare—renders the game unlawful when it kills.
b) A hunting animal. Whatever it kills is permissible provided the beast has been properly trained. -
The weapon or hunting animal must be released intentionally. If a dog—or any other hunting beast—sets off on its own, the game is not lawful unless the hunter urges it on and it increases its pursuit in response; in that case the meat is permitted.1
-
The tasmiyah—pronouncing “Bism Allah” (in the name of Allah)—must be said when releasing the arrow or the trained animal. If he omits it, whether deliberately or forgetfully, the game is not lawful. It is recommended that he add, along with the tasmiyah, the words “Allahu akbar,” just as is done in ritual slaughter.
