Zād al-MustaqniʿAl-Hajjawi

Chapter on the ḥadd for intoxicants

Every beverage whose large quantity intoxicates is unlawful even in small amounts; it is deemed khamr regardless of its origin. Drinking it is not permitted for pleasure, for medical treatment, to quench thirst, or for any other purpose—except to expel a morsel that has become lodged in the throat when no alternative is at hand. If a Muslim⦗1⦘ who is legally accountable drinks it willingly, fully aware that a large measure of it causes intoxication, he incurs the ḥadd: eighty lashes if he is free, and forty if he is a slave.

(1) The word al-mukallaf (a legally accountable person) appears in manuscripts A and B, but is missing from manuscript M and the commentary.
