Chapter on Cranial-and-Facial Wounds (al-Shijāj) and the Breaking of Bones
A shijjah is a wound confined to the head or the face1, and they are ten kinds:
- al-ḥāriṣah: it merely grazes the skin—that is, it splits it slightly without drawing blood;
- al-bāzilah, also called al-dāmiyah or al-dāmiʿah: blood flows from it;
- al-bāḍiʿah: it cuts into the flesh;
- al-mutalāḥimah: it penetrates deeply into the flesh;
- al-samḥāq: only a thin membrane remains between it and the bone.
For these five there is no fixed amount; compensation is set by equitable assessment (ḥukūmah).
- The muḍīḥah, which lays the bone bare2, entails five camels;
- the hāshimah, which exposes and crushes the bone, entails ten camels;
- the munqilah, which exposes, crushes3, and displaces the bone, entails fifteen4 camels.
For each of the maʾmūmah and the dāmighah one-third of the diyah is owed, and for the jāʾifah likewise one-third of the diyah is owed; it is the wound that

باب الشجاج وكسر العظام
الشجة: الجرح في الرأس والوجه١ خاصة وهي عشر: الحارصة التي تحرص الجلد أي: تشقه قليلا ولا تدميه ثم البازلة" وهي الدامية والدامعة" وهي التي يسيل منها الدم ثم الباضعة وهي التي تبضع اللحم ثم المتلاحمة وهي الغائصة في اللحم ثم السمحاق وهي ما بينها وبين العظم قشرة رقيقة فهذه الخمس لا مقدر فيها بل حكومة وفي الموضحة وهي ما توضح العظم٢ وتبرزه خمسة أبعرة ثم الهاشمة وهي التي توضح العظم وتهشمه وفيها عشرة أبعرة ثم المنقلة وهي ما توضح وتهشم٣ وتنقل عظامها وفيها خمس عشرة٤ من الإبل وفي كل واحدة من المأمومة والدامغة ثلث الدية وفي الجائفة ثلث الدية وهي التي
